About The Centre

Dhamma Ketana is the principal Vipassana Meditation Centre in the southern Indian state of Kerala. It is a tranquil, semi-forested 5-acre space opening into paddy fields and coconut groves in the rear. The centre is located within the district of Alappuzha; famous for its backwaters.

Although Dhamma Ketana is situated in a rural setting, it is reasonably easy to access. The centre is approximately 8km off the main North-South highway in Kerala. Most express trains stop at the railway station in the nearby town. There are 2 international airports 2.5hrs and 3hrs respectively away from the centre by road.

History

Vipassana courses in Kerala started in 1993. The first 10-day courses were conducted on rented sites. After 65 courses were successfully completed, the Kerala Vipassana Samithi was organised in 2006 in order to acquire a piece of land and begin a permanent centre for the benefit of meditators. This was the beginning of Dhamma Ketana.

The first courses were delivered with minimal facilities, using existing structures on the property. Significant developments have since been done. Today the centre conducts regular monthly 10-day courses. 2-day courses and Dhamma Server workshops are also held periodically. Facilities at Dhamma Ketana for the benefit of meditators are briefly noted as below:

  • Dhamma Hall – sufficient space for up to 30 male and 20 female meditators
  • Female Accommodation – triple rooms and dormitory, accommodating up to 20 meditators
  • Male Accommodation – triple rooms and dormitory, accommodating up to 30 meditators
  • Kitchen and Dining Hall
  • Office
  • Separate Female and Male Assistant Teachers accommodations
